ARNOLD HAYES- the PITMAN
EXPLOSIVE - RECKLESS - CHAOS

WEAPON: OLD HAUNTS

15 ammo. Fires small gobs of flaming tar with a medium firing speed. Alt-fire instead launches a short-ranged stream of flames, quickly gobbling up ammo. Fire lingers for half a second in place, damaging enemies that walk into it.

ABILITY 1: DYNAMITE
Launch a bouncing explosive that detonates after five seconds, dealing spirit damage, launching enemies away, and briefly inflicting *shellshocked.* (Shellshocked prevents movement abilities.)
Dynamite can be destroyed by enemies using a single heavy melee. It can be shot by the Pitman to detonate it early. Dynamite also launches the Pitman.
Dynamite can be held down to increase projectile speed and distance and reduce detonation time.
1: +1 charge.
2: Shellshocked enemies can't parry and take +25% damage from melee attacks.
5: +10% Dynamite damage per second active.

ABILITY 2: STRIKE THE EARTH
Slam a pickaxe on the ground, opening up a vein of cursed earth. Enemies within take damage over time.
If used in the air, swing the pickaxe down and rapidly land. Enemies collided with mid-air are dragged down to the impact zone.
1: Cursed earth also slows by 20%.
2: Enemies collided with mid-air take heavy melee damage.
5: Initial impact of Strike The Earth disarms for 2 seconds.

ABILITY 3: HELLION
Passive: While launched into the air by Dynamite, the Pitman deals extra melee and bullet damage and has additional bullet speed. Persists 1 second after landing.
1: Dynamite launches the Pitman further.
2: Can be Activate to perform a light melee that knocks back enemies.
5: Hellion buff persists 3 extra seconds after landing.

ABILITY 4: ONLY WAY OUT
Fling six enhanced Dynamite in a circle around the Pitman. Enhanced Dynamite also stuns struck enemies and has a larger explosion radius.
1: Returns 1 Dynamite charge on cast.
2: Stun duration +1s.
5: Can be recast within 15s.

LORE: 'A relic of the past that refuses to be lain to rest, the Pitman has been stockpiling gunpowder in preparation for the ritual. What does a madman wish for? A chance to stop the end of the world.'

Braznell Mine was considered to be a relatively safe workplace. So, when the first Maelstrom struck, many of its workers feared for their lives, and hid inside the mine, hoping the earth would protect them. What they didn't know was that the Maelstrom would awaken horrors long hidden from mankind... and some lurked underneath the ground.

The mine was quiet from the outside- but only because screams could not carry far enough to reach the townsfolk. But an explosion was certainly loud enough, the end of the Maelstrom punctuated by one large enough to rock half the state. Natural gas deposits (more plentiful than the mining company had predicted) combined with dynamite to blow the mine to kingdom come, causing a massive cave-in that buried the mineshafts in dirt and rubble. In the aftermath, the mine was written off- one of many unfortunate disasters caused by the Maelstrom. The citizens of Colorado avoided that haunted place for the next forty years.

That is, until a historical society came to town. Interested in the disaster and not dissuaded by ghosts, they set to work excavating the site, recovering the remains of miners to be returned to a proper place of rest. It was noted that many of the corpses were warped in unusual ways- longer limbs, blackened bones, and warped, bony spurs sticking out of joints- all written off as the consequences of their violent demise.

Seventeen bodies were recovered in total. But only the last was still moving.

Plucked from the earth- Arnold Hayes, the man out of time. A fascinating find for the historical society, the wight soon proved to be a disappointment- he was pulled up ranting and raving, practically unintelligible. Written off as insane, a ghoul driven mad by four decades buried beneath the earth, they ignored his garbled screams and turned him over to a local hospital- and from there, the gentle care of a mental asylum.

It took months for Arnold to recover, the man crazed and violent, convinced that he had an important message to tell the whole world- but the world had long since forgotten about him. The doctors and nurses ignored his warnings, so Arnold knew he'd have to solve the problem himself. He broke free, destroying part of the asylum in the process, running from Colorado all the way to New York- leaving behind a single, cryptic warning, written in his own blood on the walls of his cell.

WHEN THE MAELSTROM RETURNS
SO WILL THEY

GAMEPLAY
Pitman's gameplay is all about Dynamite- he'd be able to throw it behind enemies to launch them towards him, or at his own feet to launch him closer. He can follow up with his gun, and if close enough, his alt-fire, which is a short-range flamethrower that deals decent burst damage. Popping enemies into the air and tackling them back down with Strike The Earth can do ridiculous damage. He'd have approximately three builds- spirit damage for his Dynamite and ultimate, melee to take advantage of Strike The Earth, Hellion, and the Shellshocked melee damage increase, and a gun build supported by Hellion. Mobile and really good at bouncing enemies around, so long as his aim with Dynamite is on point.

I particularly love the idea of 'dynamite-jumping' by blowing himself up with his own dynamite. It evokes TF2 Soldier vibes. It'd probably be a fun idea to make it deal self-damage to him, so his mobility is something of a trade-off, especially since Dynamite is a charge ability.

APPEARANCE
I picture the Pitman as looking like an old-timey prospector, but severely damaged to the point of being skin and bones (mostly bones). Similar to something like a ghoul from Fallout, but with a more supernatural bent, with glowing flames for eyes, plenty of exposed bone, and a subtle aura of heat and fire. Despite that, he'd sport a big grin with a scruffy beard and prospector's hat. His weapon is a two-handed rifle with an undermounted flamethrower, both powered by a canister of condensed souls- he'd reload by unscrewing the cannister and refilling it with his own cursed aura before sticking it back on. His heavy melee would involve pulling out his pickaxe from on his back, while his dynamite comes from a satchel he has slung across his body. For his ult, he'd cackle before opening the satchel and tossing it in the air, spreading the dynamite all over the place.

Personality-wise, he's obviously crazy, but more articulate now that he's had some time to calm down. In some of his lines, he'd warn about horrible dangers lurking underground. In others, he'd be practically gleeful about being able to use his fire and explosives, showing basically no regard for his own life and safety (he isn't scared of blowing himself up). Since he's been in New York for a couple of years preparing for the ritual, he'd know some other characters. While definitely crazy, he isn't a bad or evil guy, and wouldn't insult or harm others for no reason... but he's not careful with his explosives either, so probably best to stay away from him.
