Paige's Conjure Dragon DOT causes Paige to leave Magic Carpet

+1 this needs to be addressed, the Ability Duration stat on it is good for her, but like Ivy in the past, this bug makes the item bad on her for now. Happy to provide a video but seems unnecessary when the bug is so easy to trigger.

The "Magic Carpet"-item actually gets cancelled / is dismissed by any "action" which in this case also means damage.

In practice, all auto / passive damage such as "Torment Pulse"-item and McGinnis' "Mini Turret" render Magic Carpet unutilizable unless min-maxing timings to the absolute perfection.

Probably the best solution here would be to expand / reword the item description.

There is no reason the item should function this way. For example Ivy's Kudzu ticking damage onto an enemy does not cause carpet to end.

Tested this myself just a moment ago. And I can confirm, Ivy's "Kudzu Bomb" indeed does not dismiss Magic Carpet.

To also add, Magic Carpet cannot be dismissed with a downward-dash (double-tap crouch-button while airborne).
While it does consume stamina to perform the downward-dash, due to the Carpet functioning as a pseudo-floor it is still possible to air-dash out of or after the Carpet is dismissed otherwise.

Clearly due to these inconsistencies, "Magic Carpet"-item requires a proper maintenance check-up

McGinnis can use Magic Carpet no problem with her turrets dealing damage and it will not take her off carpet. The logic for Paige's conjure dragon is in need of a rewrite, there is no reason it should cause Magic Carpet to cancel.

Torment Pulse does not cancel Magic Carpet.

Warden's ult does cause Magic Carpet to cancel WHEN IT DEALS DAMAGE, but this makes sense, and at least can be controlled by Warden looking away, in order to escape using carpet.

Paige is a hero who has mobility problems and seriously struggles to cross the map. Magic Carpet is an item that solves this problem, AND provides Ability Duration (which scales all 4 of her spells very strongly) and the item is still unplayable on her due to this bug.

Torment Pulse does not cancel Magic Carpet.
That means there has been a (stealth / not publicly noted) change in the recent patch(es).

Example thread for "Torment Pulse"-interaction:

(( Uncertain about "Spirit Burn"-interaction though. ))

One simple solution to this (short-term if unintended, or long-term if it's intended for Carpet to be cancelled by burn dmg):

just make the burning trail stop as soon as Magic Carpet begins. The burn damage is not that valuable, being able to actually use Magic Carpet is.

Still present as of the 11-21-2025 update.

Now that the split shot build craze is over, let's help the hero's identity out with fun items like Magic Carpet. Open up her build options to more creativity!!!!

What if we just said this behavior was introduced in today's patch, and we hotfixed it real quick?

Viper's Lethal Venom detonating after the delay also causes Magic Carpet to end. Shiv can knife people and fly away with Carpet while they are bleeding. Why shouldn't these heroes have the same option?

Some others cases of cancelling carpet to consider:

-Abram: Siphon ticks
-Seven: Static Charge detonating. This one makes most sense as it is applying a stun, but the stun occurring isn't truly Seven performing an action. It can occur when Seven is stunned. So why is this considered taking an action for the purpose of Magic Carpet?
-Paradox: Pulse Grenade stops carpet. From a balance standpoint I guess I can see that making sense, but again like Seven, it is not an action Paradox is taking. It can occur while she is stunned or even dead as far as I know.

Spells that do not cancel carpet:
-Mirage: Djinn's Mark detonating
-Infernus: Afterburn and Flame Dash both do NOT cancel Magic Carpet.
-Vindicta's Crow
-Drifter: Stalker's Mark ticking
-Shiv: knife's bleed ticks

-Lady Geist: Essence Bomb t3 does NOT interrupt Magic Carpet. The logic for Paige's Conjure Dragon needs to be rewritten to work the same as Essence Bomb. Life Drain does cancel it but that makes sense.

Hi guys and happy new year. This bug is still causing Magic Carpet to be awful on Paige for no good reason. Maybe we can get it addressed for the big January patch! Poggers!!!

@PaulM sorry if this is a bother I just happen to see you are a Valve Developer who is online! Us bookworm enjoyers just want to get our bug fixes on the roadmap!

I want to add that some kind developer fixed Ivy's version of this bug sometime between November 2024 and December 6 2024 update. The thread on Ivy can be found below.

I would speculate that this dev found the citadel_ability_tangotether_trigger function and removed it from the cases that cause Magic Carpet to cancel. That may have been the result of recategorizing citadel_ability_tangotether_trigger to simply not be considered an Action taken by the player. In any event, maybe the person responsible for fixing Ivy could also be consulted to remedy the many other heroes who have broken interactions with Magic Carpet.

March would be a beautiful month to squash this bug in my opinion. I will work for free if I can be provided with a developer environment, I just want my carpet to work. About half the heroes in the game are plagued by some variation of this, causing the best item in the game to suck on them.

The fact you can't rescue beam with carpet sucks.
I don't mind beam interrupting magic carpet since at least it is an action that a player deliberately performs. And Carpet has served its purpose once it has gotten you into a good position to press Beam. Heroes like Paige and Rem can have carpet cancelled by the lingering effects of a spell cast 7 seconds ago :/

It is sort of funny that AnimGraph2 dash got fixed inside of a month but these issues with carpet, which affect half the matches it's purchased in, have persisted since its 2024 release.

Magic Carpet did not need +50% buff duration to be a solid item. It needs to not get dispelled for no reason on half of the roster. Today's patch gives it way more buff duration than necessary and it will still be bad on half of the heroes in the game.
