Deadlock Fan Character Idris voice lines:

Archmother:

"Master Idris, you honor us with your presence. Your extraordinary talents and discipline will aid us greatly, and ensure the Archmother's return. Summon me and your precious students are as good as saved!"

Hidden King:

"Master Idris, your raw power and unrelenting spirit is exactly what we need to ensure the Hidden King's return. Complete the ritual, save your students and return home as the hero you were always meant to be!"

Selected voice lines:

"I promised your parents I'd bring you all back home, and that's exactly what I'm gonna do."

"I didn't want to rely on the patrons but seems I have no other choice."

"Before we start lets quickly pray for competent allies and a successful ritual."

"The secret to having a healthy spirit is taking extra care of your body, or in my case two."

"Today is a good a day let loose."

"Many people disrespect and vilify Vodou but those same people come running to our doorsteps whenever they need help with spiritual anomalies."

"May the Loa protect and guide me today."

"Appreciate the pick!"

"I won't fail you today!"

Unselected voice lines:

"I've had my fill of extraplanar entities during my time at the OSIC. Probably shouldn't rely on one today."

"Good luck!"

"I think it's smarter to not depend on random assholes I barely know for a successful ritual."

"I guess I'll have to find another way to save my students."

"I've got cultists to beat up."

"May the Loa protect and guide you on your ventures."

"I'll pray for you in my absence."

"Did I lock the academy today? I should probably check."

"Thanks for reminding me I almost forgot to pray."

Doorman Ult voice lines:

"You are powerful but a protector you are not. Others see you as a master but I see you for what you truly are. Wasted potential desperately masquerading as a Savior."

"You are not a savior Idris, the sooner you accept that the sooner you can return home to pursue the lackluster life you so desperately want. Just give up on your students! Judging by your track record you won't be able to save them anyway. (Sinister Laughter)"

"After all your years of training the only thing you've ever mastered is the ability to let down the people that need you the most. Old habits die hard I suppose.(Laughter)"

Ult voice lines:

"Nah fuck that!"

"Ya'll got me fucked up!"

"The fuck you think this is!"

"On everything you ain't getting out alive!"

"Oh hell nah!"

"Get back here!"

Curiosity Shop voice lines:

"Always a pleasure Master Idris!"

"Hope this helps you find your students."

"I feel bad for the poor fucker that has to fight you."

"Thanks for the generous tip Master Idris!"

"Selling this to a master martial artist like you is a bit overkill no?"

"Mind teaching me a thing or two? Got some people I know that would benefit from a good punch to the face."

Lore facts/clarifications:

Full name is Idris Louissaint and is Haitian American. Both New York and Florida have the highest population of Haitian Americans but not sure which state he should be from. New York is the easier choice since that's where Deadlock/the ritual takes place. But tbh Florida is funnier and probably more interesting. You know what fuck it he's from Florida, born and raised. He is in his early 30's.

I imagine his voice having some sort of vocal effect when he speaks similar to Dynamo, Haze, and Vindicta.

He is bisexual.

He is a practitioner of the martial art known as Dambe. A form of boxing originating from Nigeria.

While I imagine some of you may find him having a training dummy that is a replica of him strange. There are multiple lore reasons, the main one being is that he's a massive guy similar to Abrams in size so he needed a custom training dummy to accommodate for that. It's also not uncommon for martial art teachers to own/sell training dummies so I thought it'd make sense for him to sell smaller less advanced versions of his training dummies to students. Sharing his physical appearance for marketing and branding. The one that he uses as his current vessel is a lot more intricate and is more akin to an animatronic.

In Vodou religions there are symbols associated with powerful spirits (Loa) called veve. Often used during ceremonies and rituals, but getting a tattoo of a veve on your body is very frowned upon which is why Idris decided to put them on his dummy vessel instead. In real life this is because it is seen as disrespectful especially if you aren't a practitioner of Vodou. But in the world of Deadlock the reasoning will be that these symbols are so sacred that drawing/tattooing them on your body will cause you harm and burn your skin so its looked down upon cause it hurts you.

The mark on his on his forehead, left hand, both feet and middle back is Erzulie Dantor's symbol/veve; the Loa known as the fierce protector of women and children. His earrings are the Loa Ogun's symbol/veve; the warrior spirit of strength.

The necklace he holds in his left hand is the one he was going to return moments before his students disappearances. It belonged to a student named Clem. He originally tried to give it back to her mother but she refused and encouraged Idris to return it back to her himself.

His academy is called, "Fight Right" or "Fight Right Academy." A play on Fight Night.

Idris only drinks recreationally but when he does his favorite/go to drink is a Rhum Barbancourt or Rum in general.

Character Interactions:

Idris and Haze share a complicated history from when he worked at the OSIC. They still respect each other regardless with Idris inviting Haze for dinner/drinks after the ritual.

Lash has beaten up a student of Idris' that participated in the Bear Pit. While he respects and acknowledges Lash's combat prowess he still holds a grudge. Lash calls him "Dum Dum" or "Master Dum Dum."

Idris often goes to Paige for book recommendations. She put him on to Pride and Prejudice. If she started a book club he'd join it.

Ivy has a lot of respect for Idris because he teaches others how to protect themselves. Likewise Idris respects Ivy for dismantling the Mendoza Syndicate and is excited to work with her.

Idris dislikes the Venator because of the churches role in vilifying Vodou and other beliefs.

Wraith has tried multiple times to hire Idris as her bodyguard/enforcer. He's declined repeatedly. Wraith is aware of his attraction towards her and likes to bother him thinking he'd be a lot less boring if he let loose. Idris despises her moral character and warns her to stay away from his students.

Idris will remark that he gets why Paige is into Victor and is conflicted about his attraction towards him because he's a walking corpse. He hopes Victor can find both the answers he's looking.

Graves has heard of Idris from her friend Imani who has nothing but good things about him, and thinks he's cool cause of that. She asks him if she should become a medium for the OSIC with him saying it's ultimately up to her but strongly advises against it. He prays that she'll rid herself of the lich and cut ties for good sooner rather than later.

Idris offers Rem a place to stay in case the ritual fails and warns him not to trust the OSIC. He accepts his offer and refers to Idris as his "big friendly giant." According to Rem he smells like flowers and chocolate.

Celeste has found a fan in Idris who was recommended by his students to watch her performance at the sideshow. Celeste is flattered and offers him and by extension his students discounted tickets to her next show.

Idris and Infernus are good friends. Fern sometimes refers to Idris as "Florida Man."

Yamato likes what she assumes is Idris' hair with Idris saying his real afro is even better. She also has respect for Idris viewing him as a true warrior that the Seventh Moon could benefit from and would like to get drinks with him. Idris compliments her English and is the only character that points out that Yamato's an unusual name for a woman.

Idris likes Calico's cat and asks Calico if he can pet her. When Calico dies as an ally or enemy Idris offers to take care of Ava.

Dynamo and Idris greatly respect each other and bond over their careers as educators.

Idris despises McGinnis for exploiting and profiting off of the spirits of the dead and wishes nothing but the worse for her and Maximilian Fairfax.

Drifter expresses relief in not having to fight Idris only because he doesn't want to fight someone who can't feel pain he inflicts.

Idris offers to help separate Henry and Savannah's souls if the ritual doesn't go well. Sinclair takes him up on that offer.

Inspiration:

I thought it would be really cool to have a character that is positive rep for the Vodou religion as its often stereotyped/portrayed as a practice rooted in evil, and borderline satanism which is disrespectful to what it actually is. Plus a character that practices Vodou I think fits perfectly in the world of Deadlock. I also enjoy the character archetype of a magic user who uses their magical abilities to enhance their physical prowess which is what I intended this character to be. Using his spiritual abilities as a Vodouisant to further push his combat skills.

Dambe was also big inspo for this character as it's a unique martial art that I think is cool. His previous iterations had no ties to vodou but now that he does I thought it would only make sense to combine it with his se of Dambe. To me they go hand in hand as they are both practices originating from West Africa.

Lastly Idris' character is a reference to the term "crashing out" or "crash out" the same way Billy is a reference to the term "goat." Hence his dummy aesthetic and appearance. In previous iterations of his design he was explicitly a crash dummy but this time around he's an animatronic training dummy (inspired by bob torso training dummies). The main reason being I really liked the uncanny look of training dummies cause they have facial features and even hair but its not actual hair its just sculpted to mimic it. Allowing me to give him a distinct appearance that isn't just a generic dummy. It also fits his lore better because a martial arts teacher would have a training dummy. But personally I don't think the type of dummy he is matters as long as he is one that crashes out. Let me know if you guys agree with that line of thinking.

Feedback:

I want to make it clear that I am more than okay with any feedback/criticism regarding any art that I post. All that I ask is that you be respectful about it and keep unconstructive criticisms/comments to yourself. No need for passive aggressive attitudes about a fan project. Just be respectful, you can feel however you wanna feel about my art just don't be an asshole about it. I'm also not a game designer so if his abilities end up being more broken than I expected then suggest changes politely and remember he isn't an official character you have to deal with in game.

Lastly I want to address all the historians that'll come out the woodworks to selectively care about historical accuracy. While it's not invalid criticism I want people to remember that while Deadlock is (loosely) set in the late 40's to early 50's. Valve takes a lot of creative liberty to make Deadlocks world feel unique using it's time period as a foundation and not the rule. We have demons, goat head guy, vampires, werewolves, a unicorn, a psychic sea anemone, whatever Rem is and a robot. Deadlock does not claim to be historically accurate so who cares about historical inaccuracies unless they make a character design worse.

Now that I got that out of my chest, I hope ya'll like this fan character and lmk if this is a character you would actually play if he was in Deadlock.
