Lore

The only thing known for certain about the Penitent is that whatever she did caused enough suffering and destruction that some say she was the reason behind the creation of Lost Whispers.

Imprisoned in one of the most isolated cells of Lost Whispers—a cell buried so deep underground that even her wardens had come to forget her existence—the oubliette was not meant to be the Penitent’s eternal fate. During the escape of Seven from Lost Whispers, the Penitent took advantage of the chaos to tear off her chains, along with the pillar that restrained her, and left the prison.

Wandering the streets of New York, the Penitent now seeks absolution for crimes that few still remember.

tP & Haze

tP: We won't have a problem during the ritual, right?
H: No, but that doesn't mean I won't need to arrest you after it.
tP: If we succeed, you won't have a reason to take me in.
H: Then let's hope, for your sake, that we do.

#2

tP: Is Marlowe still in the OSIC?
H: How do you know that name?
tP: He was the lead investigator on my case back in the day... I figured he would have wanted to finish the job himself.
H: I didn't know about this... your case must have been classified...

#3

H: Get them close so I can shoot them, alright?
tP: Just promise me you'll shoot fast enough. I'm strong, but not immortal.

tP & Seven

tP: I suppose I should thank you.
S: Why?
tP: I was imprisoned in Lost Whispers like you. Whatever you did allowed me to escape.
S: Then you can repay my immense kindness by helping me complete this ritual.
tP: You got it.

#2

S: So... what are you here for exactly?
tP: I want redemption, and the patrons will give it to me... hopefully.
S: Is that so? I didn't know they imprisoned fools at Lost Whispers.
tP: Mock me all you want, Seven—it won't change anything.
S: Then perhaps a word of advice: you don't end up in Lost Whispers if there's any way you could be redeemed. Your only path is forward, so stop trying to reclaim a past that doesn't matter anymore.

#3

tP: Just tell me when you're about to use that cloud of yours. I'll make sure to lock them in it.
S: How thoughtful of you, Penitent.

tP & Venator

V: You reek of eldritch magic.
tP: People usually say I stink, so I'll take that as a compliment.
V: It wasn't one.
tP: I know, but an eternity in Lost Whispers has taught me to see the bright side of life.

#2

tP: I know you're tense—relax. I'm not here for revenge.
V: I don't trust you.
tP: Look, I know that because of what happened, you won't. But I promise you, I'm here looking for absolution. Isn't that a core tenet of Christianity?
V: It is. But after what you've done, it's hard to believe in your ability to have a second chance—or even seek one.

#3

V: You really think the patrons can absolve you of your crimes?
tP: If eldritch gods can't, then I guess I'm screwed.
V: I wasn't talking about that.
tP: Then what are you talking about?
V: Accomplishing the ritual may erase your actions, but it won't change the fact that it was your choice. You're seeking the easiest option because you don't actually want to fix things—you just want to stop feeling guilty.
tP: Shut up.

tP & Infernus

#1

I: You look like someone who needs a drink.
tP: More than one, I'm afraid.
I: If you want, I can offer you one after the ritual.
tP: That's... very nice of you. I will take you up on that offer.

#2

tP: So what do you do?
I: Put things on fire.
tP: No, I meant—what's your everyday job?
I: Oh, I'm a bartender. And you?
tP: Former Lost Whispers inmate.
I: Wow... and before that?
tP: It doesn't really matter anymore, I'm afraid...

#3

tP: There is dark magic surrounding you—are you aware?
I: No... but I think I know where it's from. I just hoped it wouldn't follow me into my new life.
tP: New life?
I: Had a... difficult past. My buddy Hank helped me when I needed it most.
tP: You got lucky then.
I: Never had anyone when you hit rock bottom?
tP: I hit rock bottom when I lost the only one who mattered to me...

Abilities and stats

The-Penitent-1777553416.png

So, the second character: the Penitent. I love tank characters, and I love muscular women—there aren’t enough of them in this game, so I had to design one.

The art used is just a placeholder to convey the general vibe of the character. It doesn’t belong to me—that’s why I kept the watermark, so people can find and follow the original artist.

Her entire lore revolves around what she did to end up in Lost Whispers. While it might be frustrating that I don’t give much information about it, I wanted to keep it as much of a mystery as possible to make it more interesting and to avoid stepping on preexisting lore too much. I try to make sure every character respects the currently known lore, so you can really imagine them existing inside the actual game.

Finally, her kit. I know “Chains and Runes” is a bit of a mess as an ability, and probably the hardest part of her kit to understand. But I really wanted to give her a unique tank passive instead of something like “+10% health regen” or “gain a shield when you take damage.” I’m not against simplifying it, but I haven’t really figured out a way to do that without removing the duality aspect that I find interesting.

As for the next character, I’m not entirely sure yet. I still need to polish abilities and write a few voicelines for the four remaining ones. I’ll probably have the next one ready by next week.
