I think it would be neat if there were an item that could convert heals to barrier and/or vice versa.
Converting a barrier to healing would trade instant but short-lived defense for real hp gained, and allow for item interactions such as healing tempo while also being vulnerable to healing reduction effects.
Converting healing to a barrier to healing would likewise trade sustained health gain for a short-lived burst of defense.
Allowing for these conversions would provide interesting tempo changes and altered hero and item dynamics.
Examples:
Paige's Plot armor at Tier 2, not accounting for spirit scaling, gives a 225 barrier that lasts for 7s.
This would convert to 225/7 = 32 hp/s over the same 7s duration.
Divine barrier gives a 6s, 600hp barrier which would become 600/6 = 100hp/s healing.
Healing Rite grants a total of 15hp/s over 20s for a total of 300 healing, which would equal a 300 hp barrier, dodging the "dispell on damage" downside but turning a lane sustain item into a more aggressive burst of defense.
Rem's Tag Along (again at ignoring scaling) grants 15% missing hp a burst heal + 28hp/s over 3s healing which would become 15% missing hp + 28*3 = 84hp barrier.
