Change the term "Heroes" to something else

Let's face it: none of these characters are heroes. They are trying to collect enough souls to summon an eldritch being for their own ends. Sure, some may have good intentions - like Dynamo trying to get his body back - but the means of doing so are anything but heroic.

The best word I can come up with is "Patrons" for the heroes. Although, it we wanted something more eldritch and actually using something in the lore, we could call them Veilwalkers.

not sure what would the right term be, but it's true that "heroes" doesn't really fit here. I also feel like it's used too much in multiplayer games in general

Not all the "heroes" in dota are heroes either. Same with overwatch I'm pretty sure. League of legends call them champions which would've been narratively relevant a decade ago. Now they're more genuinely like actual legends in their universe.

I suggest naming the heroes as the "Slaves" cus they do the bidding of Patron through blackmail and gaslighting

The issue here is that "slave" sounds very demeaning. Operative and Agent make you sound like you're part of a kick-ass organization. While hero, champion and legend, makes you out to be an individual of great standing. "Slave" doesn't really fulfill any power fantasies that usually come with games that have expansive character rosters

It was meant to be a joke not in an inappropriate way or offensive way. If im going to be serious I would name them as "Summoners" or "Enigmas"

Ah. Through a political lens I can see how it can sound offensive, but my point was more that "slave" doesn't really sound badass.

Enigma actually sounds really cool. Along with "Phenomenon" or "Anomaly". They're all a mouthful compared to "hero" but I do like the idea of the deadlock characters being regarded as supernatural oddities, even by the standards of this universe. It kinda reminds me of the organization from Hellboy. I can easily see the deadlock characters working alongside Hellboy, Abe, and the firestarter chick; like an ever-expanding squad of "freaks".

There really aren't a lot of titles to pick from. The top I could come up with that comes close to something that could encompase all the characters is either "Freelancer" or "Specialist"

I personally think Freelancer would fit the best, but you must consider that when you sell your game as a hero shooter MOBA, then it's much easier for people to refer to the playable characters as heroes. Everybody is a hero of their own story.

Yea it was meant to sound bad as a joke lol. I do like the sound of anomaly. However if they are going to change the term "Heroes" just go with "Summoners" because it's generalize, fits perfectly to what the characters are trying to achieve in the game and sounds cool. Dota=Heroes, League=Champions, Smite=Gods, Valorant=Agent, and Deadlock=Summoners

I still prefer Enigma. But to each their own :)

The answer is actually in the game, in a voice line by the shopkeeper.
They should be called "Mystics"

Relevant line: "I don't know what this does but [..] all the mystics are buying it"

It also makes sense from a setting perspective, the world of Deadlock is quite similar to our own but the rift has caused changes to only a few individuals. Of course normal people would consider these individuals mysterious, and hence call them Mystics.

It's lore accurate as of the moment but the game is still in development and constantly keeps changing. "Mystics" doesn't do it for me personally even though the definition of the word perfectly defines the characters in DL. When the game says "Choose your hero/champion/gods" it makes sense but when it comes to Mystic doesn't sound right or is awkward to use. "Oh wow! this Mystic is really fun to use", still not it.
