Change the term "Heroes" to something else

The answer is actually in the game, in a voice line by the shopkeeper.
They should be called "Mystics"

Relevant line: "I don't know what this does but [..] all the mystics are buying it"

It also makes sense from a setting perspective, the world of Deadlock is quite similar to our own but the rift has caused changes to only a few individuals. Of course normal people would consider these individuals mysterious, and hence call them Mystics.
When I've heard that voiceline I've always interpreted it as in that a "mystic" is a really good hero or whatever. So a part of me expected the highest rank name be "Mystic"

Mystic sounds cool but narratively it sounds like a word you'd use to describe sorcerers or witches, which doesn't really fit with most of the deadlock roster

I thought the same thing but here the definition of "mystic" I searched in google -> a person who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with or absorption into the Deity or the absolute, or who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect.

"The pushovers"

You said they got told to do some random ass statue chore right? What a pushovers to actually do statue chore just because they get told to.

I like the idea of using "Heralds" or "Harbingers" as a title. I especially would lean towards herald, as that title is nice and short, and pretty similar to hero.

I like Mystic or Aspirant out of everything said here, and I think if Mystic gets adopted it'll start feeling better to use as time passes. Also for the guy who said slave, why not pick Warlock instead, like in Dungeons & Dragons?

Alternatively, what about Occultist? "A person who believes in or practices occult arts, such as magic, astrology, alchemy..." etc.

Edit: I also just saw Harbingers suggested and that's also a really good one. Implies a sense of scale.

I personally think hero/heroes is a good term to use.

Heroes in the broad span of history don't have a specific bias towards good or evil deeds. Think the Iliad and how the opposing sides each had notable individuals with heroic qualities. In context with Deadlock, I feel it fairly represents the character's importance to the story while also emphasizing their capabilities to perform heroic feats.

Go with "Ascendant" the most fitting name, the game is a fight between the moon god(sapphire) vs solar god(amber) anyway.Screenshot_2024-10-24-13-32-00-31_93753c020959de0ef194d6b95604fb93.jpg

Or just go with heroes, i dont care.

Just to join this interesting discussion: Herald sounds really good to me.
Mystic has a nice ring to it but I dont see all the characters as mystics, Mo&Krill are definetely not arcane.

Ascendants, Aspirants, Acolytes would also fit quite well.
You could of course even more generalise them and call them characters instead of heroes.

Personally I think the term hero is quite heavily overused these days (it's even a hero shooter in some sorts). Though on the other hand only a bunch of nerds will call them how the game calls them. (Im sry but we are all nerds here.) Most people already have played other hero shooters and tend to usually stick with a term from there. So it doesnt truly matter except that this would give this game some additional unique character.

Nonetheless this is just a minor change, not as big as bug fixes or balance stuff, so the devs probably wont change it until the game is close to a release.
