Personally, I would like to see more SMG/Rifle characters. I enjoy upgrading my gun using gun items like different on-hit effects/damage or bullet types. However, it does feel like I am limited to a set of characters who perform a specifc role and mostly has a meta build.
In my opinion, these types of characters are very consistent laners because their gun has a larger ammo capacity and the bullets are able to capture souls or deal dps far more easily than a pistol or short range gun character.
I could also argue that these types of guns enable these characters to standardize them as the strongest gun carry types in the game. Able to push objectives quickly, from a distance, ...
