An idea that I've seen passed around a few times is that Deadlock should have unique ability modifiers- either items bought in the shop, or alterations you choose before the match starts.
However, I think that Deadlock is in a unique position compared to other MOBAs if they decide they want Heroes to be alterable. They could make 1-2 additional weapons for a Hero which alter their playstyle, in a way similar to a game called Raiders of the Broken Planet.
How this would work in Deadlock is that every hero would have weapons to choose from before the match began, of similar aesthetic & role.
If this system were implemented into Deadlock, here is what it may look like (using Venator):
Base gun- 51:20, based off an MP5. An SMG capable of close & mid range, but has high spread for mid-long range.
Gun 1- 144:1, based off an HK51. A carbine variant of a battle rifle, which would perform worse at very close range but better further out.
Gun 2- 15:3, based off an MP7. A PDW which would perform better at close ranges than 51:20 but worse further out.
