Royal ~ Full Metal ~ In Your Face

Concept art, not my final design. Im in the process of drawing some more concept art.

Sir. Aengus reigns from the mountains of Scotland, of the Royal Family. He is obsessed with what the first maelstrom brought to the world, dropping out of college (Despite his family’s protest) to pursue research of the supernatural instead. After not being satisfied with what he could learn from the Astral gate in Europe, he began to start researching in the Americas which led him to New York.

It was about 2 years into his research, 4 years before the ritual, that he felt inspired to start a death metal band–An Morrigan–as a way to preach about his findings, and to appease the entities or potential gods that may come from the astral gates. Some of his lyrics also talk about the hubris of humanity, the path to enlightenment, and his experience with Royal Heritage.

His band members were not as into the band’s meaning as Aengus was, and always thought he was a bit over-zealous. They were just in it for the money, but Aengus never knew that. And over time the band got stale, and the band broke up about a year before the ritual. But Aengus tried his best to carry the legacy on, and wished he could go back to how things were.

Aengus Today joins the ritual in hope for his band to reunite, and to be a voice for his patron through Progressive Death-Metal.

Let’s Talk Weapons and Abilities. Ill think about actual stats later, but I wanted to get him out into the world as soon as I could.

Weapon ~ Hurly
Fashioned after a 17th century Claymore, Hurly is an electric guitar casted in High Carbon steel and clad with silver, Imbued with strange substances found near the site of the astral gate in Europe.
Primary Fire: Strum the Guitar for a burst of 4 projectiles
Secondary Fire: Swing the Guitar for a forward short-ranged slash which does more damage in a wider area, but fires slower and consumes extra ammo.

Ability 1 ~ Stage Dive (Affected By Charge Items)
Throw Hurly in the direction you are facing and then fly to it, and follow up with an overhead slash that launches you up slightly, then slams you down and does spirit damage in an area in front of the impact. Can Alt-Cast to bypass the overhead slash, and keep the momentum from flying towards the sword. Hurly will stop flying forward when it comes in contact with an enemy, or map geometry.
(Ability Tiers)

• -7s Cooldown, +1 Charge
• +25 Impact Spirit Damage, +4m Throw Distance
• Enemies hit by the thrown sword are stunned for a very short duration.

Ability 2 ~ Breakdown:
Enhance the Sonic power of your guitar riffs. Weapon gains fire rate and ignores 7% of bullet resistance. Secondary fire has increased range, and consumes 3 ammo instead of 5 when this effect is active.
I would want butterflies to come from hurly, or swarm it when this effect is active.

• -12s Cooldown
• -18% Move speed on hit targets
• 15% Mag size increase, Bullet resistance bypass scales with spirit (By 0.054%)

Ability 3 ~ Mosh pit:
Activate to provide You and Nearby Allies with +2m Movement speed, and extra movement speed per hero in radius (Enemies and Allies, +0.35m Per hero, stacks max at 6). Enemies take 25% more Melee Damage within this radius.
When off cooldown, a small faint orange circle will appear around the player, to show who all is or isn't in the radius. When activated, the radius of the effect would summon little black transparent (Ghost) hands swinging fists around, pumping their fists in the air, or showing the rock and roll gesture.

• +1.5s Duration,
• Provides +8% Bullet Resist while Active, +0.15m speed per hero in radius
• Allies within Radius stunned by parries will be stunned for 1s less. Increase Extra Speed cap to 9 stacks.

Ultimate ~ Encore:
Plays a sick riff that damages and slows enemies in its radius (Enemies out of line of sight are 50% less affected), and effects ramp up the longer the enemy is affected by it. At the end of the duration, strum one last time for a large damaging shockwave that stuns and applies Knockup (Aengus can end his ult early, to proc the stun earlier. There is a minimum ult duration of 1.5s before he can call the stun prematurely. And doing so would have a shorter Stun Duration) Allies within the radius gain HP Regen.
Upon casting ult, a stone column would erupt from the ground below him as a “Stage”.

• +40% Spirit and Bullet Resist while Playing.
• Allies within Radius gain +2m speed. -45s Cooldown
• Allies gain +250 Barrier if Hit by shockwave. +35 DPS

Personality
Aengus carries himself with a specific sense of confidence. He is conscious of his own ability, and when he thinks something can be accomplished, he makes it his entire personality to do so. Aengus is part of the British Royal Family, but fled the Royal life to research the supernatural. He doesn’t let his Royal heritage control his personality, but the fact is not lost on him. He doesn’t like when people point him out for his Heritage, as it “Didn’t mean much for him anyway.”
He is extremely Kind and Protective of those he cares about. But He is also a true believer of F**k around and find out, and will not sugar coat anything. He takes everything at face value. He has a strong distaste for those who abuse their power, and/or take advantage of those lesser than them.

His voice lines would be heavily inspired by quotes from MacBeth, Death Metal Lyrics, and quotes from Medieval Knights/Kings. I also think it would be unique to incorporate some Scots into his voice lines.

Doorman (Ult)
Short : Your lyrics sure are… Something… I guess?
Long: Listen, It’s really sweet how you’re trying to suck up to the patrons as some sort of messenger. But face it, Hermes runs circles around you. Maybe if your music was a little more interesting then your family wouldn’t mind you bailing on them like your bandmates left you, especially since they only cared about the album revenue.

Design Philosophy
I wanted him to be half Death-Metal Singer, and half Scottish Knight. And more specifically I didn’t want a suit of armor with skulls and spikes and stuff on it, like one would typically imagine when you say Death-Metal Knight. I wanted the Death Metal part and Knight part to be 2 separate halves of the same being.
I wanted there to be a bit of Juxtaposition between his two halves. The Knight part of him acts as his protective caring side, as knights are. A strong devotion to defending values, and people he cares about. And then the death metal side of him, which is all about him pushing a message, and being a messenger for the patrons, and those who can’t speak up for themselves.
There’s this specific aesthetic I’ve been getting on my pinterest a lot where there’s like medieval knight armor peeking through Modern clothing, and I just think that it is the coolest thing ever. Never really thought of a way to incorporate it into a drawing. Until I went to a Death metal concert with a buddy of mine the day prior to the first day of me writing this. That concert is what inspired the Character :3
Aengus’ values, aesthetic, and story are also partly inspired by the lyrics of Opeth (Not who I saw live unfortunately). More specifically the Deliverance, Damnation, and Blackwater Park Albums. (You WILL listen to Opeth...)
