Doctor Hartwell, Occult Physician

When the age of mysticism began, the field of medicine was forever changed. As occult cures replaced traditional treatments, doctors became practitioners of magic as well as medicine. Doctor Felix Hartwell, a per-eminent occult physician in London, was swayed by a lucrative offer from MPS (Mystical Pharmaceutical Stores) to relocate to the Cursed Apple. But while the money was nice – as was the chance to hone his craft in one of the most mystical cities in the world – Hartwell grew disillusioned with MPS’s profit-driven goals. He resigned and started his own clinic, offering discounts for those struggling to pay for treatment. His philanthropy drew the ire of MPS and other arcane medical associations, and Hartwell found himself under threat from powerful people. The Ritual might be his best option to keep his clinic – and himself – safe.

I’m not a writer but I gave it a go! I wanted to explain some of my choices:

  • He’s from London as I want to find out more lore about the UK in Deadlock’s universe
  • He’s a Doctor because I feel it’s an archetype not fully filled by any member of the current roster – sure, McGinnis has her Medicinal Specter but she’s much more of an engineer. It’d be great to see how the Maelstrom affected the field of medicine
  • He’s a more moral character to distance him from Valve’s other famous doctor and because the cast has plenty of morally gray characters
Weapon: Second Opinion
Second Opinion is a bolt action dart rifle; I envision it being adorned with an ornamental caduceus along the barrel, snakes curling around it and the wings framing the sights. It has the unique weapon property ‘Damage over Time’. How this would work is the projectiles deal 10 initial damage, then 15 additional damage spread over 1.5 seconds. One aspect of this is that Falloff damage only applies to the initial damage. Items that grant weapon damage increase both values separately – i.e. a 10% weapon damage bonus increases the initial damage to 11 and the over time damage to 16.5.

Since he's a Doctor, of course his kit should lean more support/healing oriented. I had a go making his abilities - no idea on balance so take all values with a heap of salt, I just wanted to get the feel for what they could look like. In particular I have NO idea about the balancing of his Ult. These are mainly just to get the ideas across.

Something to add since Venator came out and has abilities that scale with Weapon Damage - it would be cool if a Doctor character had abilities that scaled with Vitality (if that's even possible, would it be scaling with Health instead?)
