In the Salem witch trials there was a man named named Giles Corey who was accused of witchcraft along with the other unfortunate victims of the mass hysteria. during witch (ha) he refused to even engage with the trials, not even offering a plea of guilty or not guilty. He was then sentence to death by pressing, where a plank was put atop his body and rocks above that, with the intention of crushing him. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:
