I think your assumption is MVP = most kills, player damage, K/D aka typical stat.
Actually when I saw first signs that Valve seemingly has introduced actual analysis not only of that but e.g. clutches, game altering urn deliveries and timely takeovers I actually was happy to see that.
Partially because ego playing kill kids will get upset for not getting the candy = MVP all the time
I honestly think that this system is better than one you have in mind and would not really argue (even without seeing the game) that the Doorman with 27 assists, good k/d, good damage, basically top 3 in all positive categories shouldn't get the MVP.
I really hate when game rewards those kill eager hero-ball players with even 30 kills when all they did was safely push mid lane selling their teammates as soon as shit hits the fan to save their KD, did 0 on defense or pushing lanes all game, did close to none objective damage because "I need to farm kills in mid lane" and by the end of the game they get MVP / probably also more rank points than me who babysit them, body guard them and keep lanes tidy as their moms probably do irl.
If that is not a bug again kudos to Valve! MVP thing is one positive thing in this mess of a game otherwise!
