I've thought about it for a bit more. While I still have my overall doubts, I have chosen to believe that this concept inspired Doorman.I can't blame you for being skeptical (I hardly believe it myself), but I've noticed several similarities - not just mechanically, but visually as well.
On the mechanical side:
Visually & Aesthetically:
- Keys in the primary weapon
- Cart Ability (Frynd's is an ult, Doorman's is normal.)
- Door portal ability
- Opening portals to their domain (Frynd only uses this to summon things, while the Doorman uses it to trap players)
- Teal eyes (Frynd is entirely teal, which makes me think this was somewhat intentional)
- Tall, gaunt, pale figure
- Eldritch/Unknowable being that takes the form of a human to learn about/experience them
- Service theme (Frynd is an Innkeeper, the Doorman is... a doorman)
Even if it isn't true, Doorman has gotten nothing but a very positive reception from the general audience, even from people outside of the Deadlock community. I believe that having a very well-received hero release linked to a concept from here is an overall net positive for the entire concept designing sphere. Especially if it leads Valve to use more community concepts in the near or distant future.
