I just upgraded my PC so I never noticed this, but the higher your FPS the faster the smoke wall particles move upwards, meaning at high enough FPS you basically just see right through the walls, because the particles move so fast.
To visualize the difference you can cap your FPS or just press escape if your menu FPS cap is lower than your game runs at.
At 40 FPS in the menu the wall is nice and slow and obscures what's behind as intended, at 600 FPS (very low settings on a brand new computer) the wall is basically gone with the particles shooting up into the sky at record speed.
I believe the speed should be consistent across systems instead of linked to FPS.
