Mid-game crash - corrupted file

I've gotten this bug twice now, not sure of the cause though. Mid-way through a game I will get a game hang and this corrupted file dialog, followed by typical windows crash behaviour (wait for respond etc. etc.).

Next thing I did was of course verifying files, but that gets stuck at 0%. I tried restarting, but gets stuck at 0% again.

First time it happened I didn't remember the file path, so I tried just deleting all the game files, then launch steam and verify worked triggering a redownload.

Second time I took the screenshot, and I tried just deleting the corrupt file, but verify stopped at 0% again. So I tried deleting all .vpks in the citadel folder. Restarted steam and then I just hit Play, this triggered a redownload of missing files and then the game launched. I reconnected to the game I was in as soon as I could, and it was a bit buggy for the first 10-20 seconds (frame drops and minimap only showed lanes but no icons for towers/players) but after those 20 seconds or so it all went back to normal.

I have also gotten this exact same issue on numerous occasions the past week or two. Verifying files doesn't seem to trigger either even after full restart of PC.

  • There are often problems with RAM. Pull out one of the dice if you have several of them. Or limit the frequency to 2666 if you have fast ones (More than 4000hz).
  • Try changing the Render API to another one. From Vulkan to DirectX or vice versa;
  • Be sure to disable all undervolt. You could do this with software like MSI Afterburner or similar. Undervolt of the graphics card or CPU acceleration may negatively affect the game;
  • Write the full specification of your computer. It can be obtained through the Steam client. In the upper-left corner there will be "Help" -> "System Information". Copy the entire text and paste it into the spoiler so that it does not take up much space;
  • Find possible Crush Dumps. Put them in one zip archive and upload them to the forum. Crush Dumps are in two places:
    • "..\steamapps\common\Project8Staging\game\bin\win64\project8_*_*_*_*_*.mdmp",
    • "..\Steam\dumps\crash_project8.exe_*_*.dmp";

No under clocking and no msi afterburner

some small underclocking in ryzen master, system is very stable outside of deadlock. I won't disable it since it only happens sometimes and otherwise the game runs fine.

In a more interesting development, I got the same issue when playing dota just now. First time its happened in dota and I have a disgusting number of hours, both on this system and off. In contrast to deadlock, Dota 2 immediately autoverified files, but then got stuck at "Updating 0%" in the steam library. I manually verified files, which again worked but then got stuck at updating 0%. I restarted steam and Dota was able to be launched without any issue.

Again, these crashes aren't an active issue for me that I need an urgent workaround like removing my undervolt. Just want to provide info for the devs to fix it in the long term.

There are actually even more options for solving this problem. Checking the RAM for errors, defragmenting the disk, for some people it was simply helped to lower the graphics settings to the minimum, etc. (This is a comparison of the same error with dota 2, I've had this error in Dota 2 a couple of times in my life and it never appears again, but it keeps crashing when I get into DeadLock.).
Anyway, most of the methods have been tried and still the problem is not on my side.
