Hero Idea - Inventor - A weapon changing hero

Hello.
One night I had trouble sleeping so I was thinking about a hero concept a little bit. Not sure how interesting it is, how good it is lore-wise and how easy it to implement (some abilities). No visuals, just abilities, it is pretty raw and has its difficulties. Anyway, let’s start.

Theme: An inventor using different weapons/gadgets/devices.

Role: Tank/Bruiser, Area denial(?), Team fight initiator(?)

Basic gun: a long-range bolt thrower (or a shotgun) probably on the low end of ammo.

The main idea was to make a weapon transformation kind of a character:

1 – Grenade Launcher:

Inventor tears off a part of his basic gun, transforming it into a grenade launcher, changing its properties. The detached part is held in another arm enhancing his melee strikes.

Ideas:
  1. Low ammo for grenades, like 3-4 starting or even lower depending on their damage and properties (Do they bounce? Do they stick to the ground for some time and explode on contact or timer? Do they knock up knock back a little?) and also on the ammo of the basic gun.
  2. The main problem might be switching between weapons with high fire rate, if they reload while another is in use. Feels bad if they don’t reload while you have another one out, so as the 2 ability also is another weapon -> maybe give a 10 sec cooldown to 1 after using it -> can’t switch back to basic gun immediately after firing everything, but can switch to 2 or reload the grenade launcher itself.
  3. Melee enhancement – striking with the detached part: +melee damage? (boring), bleed DoT? Slow or other debuff? Small knock-up? (if uppercut-like strike)
Ability enhancement ideas:
modify grenade behavior? (enable bounces or give more if starting with like 1 bounce, enable staying on the ground for some time, size? (as it’s a weapon it shouldn’t be affected by ability range, so maybe through the skill points)

2 – Flamethrower:

Inventor modifies his gun, transforming it into a flamethrower.

Ideas:
  1. High ammo, 2 fire modes: left mouse click is a narrow flame which grows in length the longer you fire it (mid to long range); right mouse click is a wide flame in a cone (short to mid range), easier to hit people when they are in range, so maybe more ammo usage (like double or triple?).
  2. Damage from flamethrower could be 50% weapon 50% stacking spirit DoT (or something else).
Crazy idea: pressing both mouse buttons for 0.5-1+ sec releases both flames with increased intensity resulting in a blast (using more ammo, doing blast damage and/or exploding the DoT immediately) and propelling Inventor backwards (for reasonable distance). Escape/mobility tool, finisher move.

Ability enhancement ideas:
Enhance DoT part, add debuffs (healing reduction, small slows move and/or fire rate).


3 – Shield:

Inventor put’s up a shield in front of him getting a damage reduction while it lasts. The shield blocks/catches projectiles that touch it applying their effect immediately (like bombs from Lady Geist would explode on contact). It lasts a limited amount of time, on re-activation or expiration Inventor launches the energy as fast-moving long-range projectile using the percentage of damage received/reduced into the shield (up to some cap) as its damage.
Using Shield transforms the gun into Flamethrower and locks other forms until expiration.

Ideas:
  1. Shield is bigger than Inventor, but not too big, not Reinhardt size. Maybe the Inventor is a short dwarf/gnome like stocky guy -> Shield could be a regular person height and reasonable width.
  2. Reasonable cooldown which gets halved if you hit the projectile? Also, could scale the CD reduction with the damage dealt, so less value for 1 sec Shield.
Enhancement ideas:
Move speed while shielded, more damage reduction, more scaling on damaging part.

Basic gun problems:
Why use basic gun when we have all other guns? Will the character be weaker, because he has no spammable abilities and instead is locked into another gun?

Some ideas in that regard:
  • 5 skill points upgrades (or maybe even 2 and/or 5) should provide something for the basic gun? Grenade Launcher: melee enhance in basic form or add explosions to bolts (if bolt thrower, like Yamato alt-fire). Flamethrower: basic gun explodes the DoT in an increased area. Shield: get some passive damage reduction in basic gun (boring I know)
  • Make a grace period on switching between Grenade Launcher and Flamethrower bigger than switching back to basic gun.
  • Basic gun should be the best long-range weapon (so bolt thrower): better velocity and more ammo than grenades, better range than flamethrower.
The Ultimate ability is probably crazy, anyway meet the

4 – Slow Zone:

Inventor launches a projectile that expands after 1-2? Seconds after hitting any surface. (Imagine Gazlowe ult in HOTS) It expands in a (very) big sphere which affects both allies and enemies.
Every character except the Inventor gets -40% (or other number) movement speed which gradually reduces to 20% (or other number) in 2-3 seconds. It also reduces dash distance by the same rules (starting bigger).
Inventor isn’t affected by ANY debuffs but instead gets a buff to his move speed 20%->40% over 2-3 seconds and fire rate, projectile velocity inside the Zone.

Ideas:
  1. Big CD, big size
  2. Any entity (except for Inventor) that tries to enter and leave the Slow Zone = touches it’s border, gets slowed by 90% for 0.5 sec. Applies both to characters and projectiles. (Like Paradox Time Wall)
  3. Apply the same reducing over time slowing effects on projectile speeds (idk if it’s doable and reasonable at all)
Enhancement ideas:
- CD, + buffs for Inventor, 5 points: disable movement abilities and items for 2 sec?
