Game crashed, .vpk file corrupted, slow game file verification, 24h ban + low prio queue

Played a standard match (Match ID: 54809699, Paradox), game crashes 6 mins in, pop-up error reads '[file].vpk is corrupt.', verify game files via steam client, reconnect back after 9 mins and continue match until defeat screen, issued a leaver penalty, banned from standard matches for 24 hour + must win 1 low priority queue to return to standard matchmaking.

This issue usually occurs in this sequence: game crashes, pop-up error reads '[file].vpk is corrupt.', try to relaunch deadlock on steam, game refuses to launch and is indefinitely stuck on the dialogue 'LAUNCHING Downloading content (0%)', restart steam, game wont launch, restart PC, open steam, game wont launch, try to verify game files, verification stuck at 0%, repeat until game files are able to be fully verified, launch deadlock.

This time, I was able to bypass the launch being stuck at 'Downloading content (0%)' and start immediately verifying the game files by switching to another account logged into the steam client to verify deadlock's game files from that account then returning to the previous account to launch the game. Although, verifying the games files still takes an excruciatingly long time to completly finish even on a somewhat decent PC build.

This issue has happened twice previously; first time during a standard match pre-'old gods, new blood' update (15 minute matchmaking ban), and second time during a street brawl (6 hour ban). These are the only 3 instances were I have been issued a temporary ban from queuing. I have never purposefully abandoned left or rage-quit a standard game of deadlock unless the match states it is safe to leave or it wont be scored, even then I would play the game through.

In all, I want to discuss potential fixes to this issue, or at least ways of reconnecting back into the game sooner to avoid the leaver penalty as verifying game files via steam takes up the bulk of the time in the effort to reconnect. Previously, I have tried disabling steam cloud, clearing download cache, changing download region and fully restarting the PC which all did not work or have been inconsistent at launching deadlock on steam. Also, I have never downloaded nor currently have any third-party mods installed for this game.

I understand that this isn't solely a deadlock issue as part of the problem stems from the steam client as well. I also understand that this is ultimately a closed-beta video game in early development, I am a playtester, and that bugs like these bound to happen.

Also, I want to discuss valve's approach to their current punishment system. It seems like my punishment history is permanentely tied to my account and the ban duration only increases with each subsequent ban (i.e. there's no punishment cooldown and my account will never see a 15 min ban). I cant imagine how severe the leaver penalty punishment would be after a 24 hour matchmaking ban + 1 required win in low prio queue (please verify). Also, given the more frequent crashes in these recent updates, I'm pretty hesitant to even play the game might the game randomly crash, corrupt the game files and send my account back to low priority. OCE matchmaking is pretty dodgy especially in low elo so I'm pretty hesitant to play a low elo low priority queue to get back to normal matchmaking. I'm not a fan of making alt accounts especially for competitive games and punishment/ban evasion. I had almost 200 votes on Silver and I didnt even get to play her on release lol.

Cheers.

Similarly I am in low priority que because my internet crashed during a game, and because of that I quit playing for 6 months and have come back to this punishment still being in place and now I can't even get into a match! I've been sitting here for 2 hours in que waiting and if my internet disconnects for any short period of time, lets say less than a second, it just endlessly searches for a match and wont connect, even in street brawl. Also why do you have to win a game to satisfy the punishment, a skill based punishment is not a really fair option - it ought to be a one game punishment to complete the match instead of being skill based. At any rate, I hope they fix the issues were having and you can get back in the game asap OP.

Same here, i love this game, playing it this new update is awesome, but the crashes and sometimes even bad conection quite sad that i get banned for thoses things, but anyways it happens, hope they fix the issues and i get to play the game without crashes and bugs, i do not get banned

Very similar experience on my end, banned for the 4th time because of corruption/game crashes. posting from my thread-

Started loading into a game as Graves, game crashed while waiting for everyone else to load. Was able to launch and reconnect fairly quickly, but in the top right corner it said the match "was not scored and was safe to leave" in a green box. It DID NOT say the game was abandoned but everyone still disconnected because the game told everyone it was safe to leave. This match was not saved in my match history im guessing because it didn't pass the "are all players loaded" check

I then went into another match like normal as Paige (Match ID: 57043547) played through the entire match with no issue, then went to play another and was told I was banned again? I literally have no idea what is happening at this point. Even when a match is safe to leave because the game crashed you still get panelized for it.

I want to be a part of this community and give feedback, but punishing players because the game is unfinished is pushing me to spend my free time elsewhere.

the game was disconnecting me over and over so i try to fix it restarting the game but i could not open the game and when i did enter back i am now 24h band and with low prio q, and its sad that happend bc i love this game i have 80h

It's happening to me too, corrupted files, then crash, then stuck on downloading content 0%, and when I'm able to join the game again, I already got the penalty.

it started happening for me since Celeste update, before I had corrupted files after every update but never a crash.

I never quit, but I have no control over the game crashing and not letting me rejoin in time.

Happened again today right after the Apollo update. went into a match as Mcginnis and crashed right after seeing the zipline (match id 57872879 ). Spent the next 30 mins trying to get the game to launch (even tried steam deck but was still crashing). Received another 24 hour ban and low priority

Same song and dance here. I can put up with verifying files and even having to reinstall the game. But the bans are going to end up forcing me to take a hiatus, especially if there's no cooldown on the ban severity.

UPDATE: Game crashed with .vpk file error after queuing for street brawl resulting in a 6 hour matchmaking ban.

Joined friend's party, queued for street brawl, as soon as we find a match and connected to the server the game crashes with the '[file].vpk is corrupt' error (game didn't make it to the 'Joining Fight As...' screen), verified game files through alt account, launch deadlock, 6 hour matchmaking ban. The game can crash and give a '[file].vpk is corrupt' error way before the match even starts.

I got a 6 hour matchmaking ban because I essentially "dodged" a street brawl match during the 'Joining Fight As...' screen like I had time to reset PC, switch to an alt steam account, verify game files, launch deadlock and make it back to the loading screen in time for the match to start. From my friend's perspective, everyone was waiting on the 'Joining Fight As...' loading screen with the message 'Players Connecting 7/8' until the timer eventually ran out and kicked everyone out.

This is the first time this issue has happened this way as the game usually crashes with a .vpk file corruption error during a live match. An instant 6 hour ban is still a harsh punishment considering I was unable to connect during a pre-game loading screen (in which both team would have to queue again) instead of during a live match (which would actually inconvenience my team as they woud be down one player). I wasn't intentionally trying to dodge a street brawl match. This punishment would be fitting if I had been consecutively and intentionally dodging during the loading screen more than three times because a 6 hour ban off the bat for failing to connect during the loading screen of a STREET BRAWL MATCH is crazy. I'm glad we queued for street brawl because I reckon I would've gotten a more severe punishment (24h ban + low prio) if we queued for a standard match instead. I reckon they should look into revising deadlock's punishment system since the severity of these punishments of something this negligible would only lead to players being discouraged to play the game and more smurf accounts being made to ban/punishment evade.

Since my last post, I mentioned I've uninstalled and reinstalled deadlock onto another drive (from D: to C: ) and I reckon it has helped in speeding up the process of verifying the integrity of game file via steam, and that's about it because I was still able to encounter the '[file].vpk is corrupt' error. The only solution I could think of to avoid this error is to verify integrity of the game files after every match or two (which is stupid and it sucks). The idea of replacing/upgrading hardware such as SSDs, GPUs and RAM isn't viable to most players given their current prices and should not be a final option because this idea that you should be using the latest and most powerful hardware to enjoy a game is stupid and such a monster hunter wilds mentality (at that point just wait till the game fully releases).

I'm still open to discuss potential fixes to this issue and theories of what could be causing the specific .vpk files to become corrupt while the game is running and during gameplay. Also, if there is a folder in the game's file that keeps track of logs and crash reports, please let me know if it exists. We still need more eyes on this issue especially from the devs so I would encourage you all to keep posting and commenting your experiences with this specific issue in this thread and similar related threads.

Cheers.

Something I tried to mitigate the issue is to verify the files before opening Deadlock for the first time since powering up the computer. It has helped in the way that, the game doesn't crash upon finding a match, but sometimes after the match ended and going back to lobby ( so you avoid the leaver penalty stack ).

I was able to play two days in a row for a few hours each day. But yesterday it happened again so I got a 24h ban and low priority queue.

Honestly, no other game gives me such issues, so I'm starting to think it's something related specifically to how Deadlock works, or maybe server-side file checking? I really don't have enough knowledge to figure it out.

Anyway, it's always the "pak01.vpk" file getting corrupted, or in some rare instances, the "midtown" map file, which full name I don't remember.

I'd love some form of acknowledgement from the devs about the issue, as there is multiple threads about leaver penalties due to crashes.

Please Valve, it's a really cool game, and I really want to play it, send help.

Same issue for the midtown map file. It's rather annoying as it is no fault of my own. It would be one thing if I were running the modded version of the game while this happened or something, but it feels it makes no difference between vanilla or modded. It's just a roll of the die and you gotta take the punishment.

What really gets me is the disconnects into verifying combo that makes you unable to reconnect to the game. Lmao.
