Assists & How They Work

Assists in this game feel a little off.

I understand getting assists from healing and providing shields to teammates when they kill somebody. I also understand getting assists even if you tickle the enemy for 10 damage, even though it feels cheap.

However I really dont understand why I'm getting assists for being in the general vicinity of a fight. Sometimes I'm getting crossmap assists from the green lane for fights happening in yellow lane just because I damaged an enemy minutes ago. Other times I can't even recall interacting with any of the heros engaged in a fight and I sill get an assist.

My friend's point this out when we queue. I clearly remember a time when they were playing Seven, and they had been farming in the jungle for at least 5 minutes, avoiding fights since they were behind. A fight breaks out near their lane, and it ends quickly. They didn't contribute to the fight at all (since they didn't leave the jungle), but they mention that they got an assist for being in the general area.

I also might be misremembering, so take this with a grain of salt, but I swear I've gotten crossmap assists even in laning phases, when I haven't left the lane once.

This isn't the end of the world, I don't care much for KDA, but it would be nice if the rules for how assists are rewarded would be cleared up for the community.

- Is there a set amount of damage you need to do to get an assist?
- Is there a time limit after you damaged an enemy that somebody has to kill the enemy within?
- Is being in the general vicinity of a fight enough to contribute towards an assist?
