I recorded a video below, the McGinnis is there just for the turrets to lower the shield to show that Yamato's Powerslash in fact isn't damaging Midboss' health.
As the video shows, the problem seems to be when trying to slash at a lower part of the hitbox, it does damage when aiming it much higher up.
