Street Brawl NOT allowing more than 3 actives incorrectly thinks players have have no active slots left

I had a game today where I had the option to pick Knockdown in Street Brawl when I had an active slot AND item slot open (round 2) and yet it wouldn't let me, saying I had no item slots left. The same thing happened to another player on my team in round 4. I was Lash, he was Holliday, matchID 52264043.
