When my item slots were full, I had some options for upgrading existing items that came with free ones. (Like upgrade Spirit Lifesteal to Leech and get Enchanters Emblem for free). I thought it would let me choose which item to replace but it "replaced" the Spirit Lifesteal with Enchanters Emblem but I still had everything that came with Leech. And then later on, I got the Frost imbue emblem legendary and when I selected it, it didn't show up in my items but I was STILL getting the benefit from it. You can see evidence of this by looking at McGinnis end-game items and the damage breakdown. It doesn't show I have Frostbite Charm but damage from it shows in the damage breakdown.
