Steam Overlay drastically impacts framerate

To the point where the steam overlay is practically unusable, 2 or 3 fps and lots of lag when clicking on things. I also have very poor performance when using the steam recording function, not sure if these two things are related.

Seconded. Steam recording seems to sometimes just pause your game as it's struggling with the background recording function. I haven't disabled overlay yet but seeing as it might be a culprit might as well try without it for a while.
