Right now there seems to be a phenomenon where playing on an alt account will let you easily surpass your rank peak on your main account. Why does it do this? It's due to rank uncertainty, which is how certain the game is that you belong at any given rank.
Since around the 26th Jan update, rank uncertainty for new accounts seems to have been adjusted. That is to say, you gain much more rank for winning than you did before. Why is this the case? One theory is that it's necessary to distribute the huge influx of new players across all the ranks. Ok, fair enough. However, this creates an abusable loophole for those who recognise it - anyone can make a smurf account now, take advantage of the high rank uncertainty and catapult themselves into a rank far higher than their main. The game treats them as a brand new player when they may have hundreds or thousands of hours played.
Why is this bad? Smurfing is essentially subjecting people to an unfair match. To smurf, you must have a main account which more accurately represents your skill. However anyone who wants to rank up on their main faces a much steeper climb due to high rank certainty.
Therefore, this system is incentivizing people to smurf and honest players are being punished. Anyone can jump up at least an entire division, e.g. oracle to phantom or ascendant to eternus, with absolutely zero effort, because of how the system currently works.
Whether this is a known side effect of a decision made on the rank system or unintentional, this needs to be addressed at some point or the game will become much less enjoyable for those who want a fair and honest system.
