Range-based defense items?

It would be interesting to have an item that makes you take significantly less damage within melee or long ranged distances, with perhaps a trade-off of being more vulnerable to the opposite range; perhaps even make it an ability you have to channel to swap these ranges, so as to avoid item clutter and make it require an ability slot for balancing purposes; It would likely be of great use in early games where you're stuck in a lane against specific heroes your character may perform poorly against
