The kit could be mostly garbage utility tricks and few powerful and cruel spells that depend on his robe and hat. Something like cursing someone to be clumsy for a while or knotting their shoes (creates spectral shoes for Vindicta) or just making smoke for robeless spells, and fire ball or a spell that blinds/makes the teammates of the enemy invisible to the target for powerful spells.
This theme easily makes up for a character that could be a hoarder of writings but doesn't take them seriously or is afraid to. He could wish the patrons to make use of him so that he doesn't have to be responsible for the knowledge he holds or something like that.
