I believe new user onboarding is borked at the moment. Several comments on Yoshi's profile today, plus my own experience, indicate new users are able to click their invite links and get a success message, but the game is not showing up in the Steam client. Restarting the client did not fix the problem. Clicking the invite link again returns a message saying the package has been claimed.

It's hard to trust if it's an 'issue' or if hundreds of people are abusing the system tbh.
Get your friend to send you another invite to another email and select the correct account.
Will only take 1 or 2 days to get in most likely.
They accepted 3,164 new members today alone. Not a long wait!
