- The Rat King
At a young age, Jack Dawkins and his brother Junior lost their parents in a fire when they failed to pay protection money to one of the local gangs. Jack was willing to do anything to provide for his brother and quickly discovered a talent for thievery and pickpocketing. Over time he and his brother formed a gang of notorious child thieves and pickpockets under the auspices of the famed gang, The Tunnel Rats, where they became known affectionately as "The Street Rats". Jack was looked on fondly by the local criminals for his cocksure attitude and his capacity for quips and insults.
One day Jack and his gang were entrusted with assisting in the transport of unmarked cargo through the tunnels. One of the crates was knocked over and a number off odd objects spilled out, including a dusty and tarnished silver crown. "A crown for you my liege," announced Junior, placing the object on his brother's head. "All hail the Rat King!" they cried, before the tunnels exploded into violence. The OSIC had uncovered rumors of stolen occult artifacts being transported through the tunnels.
The Street Rats were caught in the crossfire between the Tunnel Rats and the OSIC agents. Jack managed to escape, dragging Junior behind him. Jack was astonished to find himself unharmed. The crown seemed to have protected him. Unfortunately the same could not be said for Junior. Jack watched the light drain from his brother's eyes and in that moment, he saw a glowing orb appear over his brother's lifeless body. Jack held the orb gently, curled up and cried himself to sleep. In the morning, he awoke to find a curiously large and fluffy rat, snuggled into his coat. He looked into its eyes and saw the glowing light of his brother's soul orb reflected there.
Now Jack is hunted by both the OSIC and the Tunnel Rats. His only desire is to protect Junior and to find a way to save the souls of the other Street Rats if he can
- Visual design: Inspired by The Artful Dodger (Oliver Twist). Undersized young man, wearing oversized clothes, particularly a large coat which occasionally bulges and moves and a tarnished crown that hangs off his head. A large rat with a hat pokes out of his coat during certain animations. Perhaps looking around while he rides the rails or nearly tumbling out when he slides.
- Audio design: Young kid trying to sound experienced and world-weary. Snarky and condescending when doing well, but revealing a fearful and traumatized aspect when on low health or defeated.
- Weapon: Round-reloading lever action rifle almost too big for him to handle.
- Stats(best guess, relatively high damage, but reload rate is slow enough in the early game that it is difficult to last hit and harass effectively hero practically cannot lane without ammo scavenger)
- Bullet damage 25
- Bullets per sec: 2.3
- Ammo: 10
- Slow reload speed (spirit scaling)
- Max Health: 500-550 (relatively low boon growth)
- Base Bullet Resist: 0%
- Base Spirit Resist: 0%
- Move speed: 6m/s
- Sprint Speed: 3m/s
- Stamina: 3
- [1] Pickpocket (1 Charge, hero target): Toss a chubby, gleeful rat (Junior) at an enemy, the rat rifles through their pockets and the enemy begins to lose souls which are emitted as normal orange soul orbs. Orbs are emitted at a high angle, difficult to melee. "Denying" the orbs deals escalating spirit damage to the target. If the debuff is refreshed the stacking continues.
Spirit scaling increases the duration and damage of shots. Duration/charge spacing initally too low to chain together charges.- Level 1 - Increased base soul steal rate.
- Level 2 - +2 Charges
- Level 3 - Increased base duration. Orbs are now green.
- Rework: Shooting the orbs instead deals your gun damage, upgrading to dealing headshots and proccing related effects at level 3.
- [2] Gibe (Long cooldown, AoE centered on Rat King): The Rat King taunts all nearby enemies, reducing their spirit by X for Y seconds or until Rat King is killed. Negative spirit values will reduce ability damage below base values.
- Level 1 - Reduce cooldown.
- Level 2 - Increased radius
- Level 3 - Add % scaling to the reduction and gain a percentage of reduced spirit for yourself for the duration.
- [3] Skedaddle (passive): Grants bullet and spirit shields. Rat King gains his sprint speed buff when either his bullet or spirit shields are depleted, but loses it for several seconds while shooting or meleeing. Buff is doubled when both are depleted.
- Level 1 - Sprint speed scales based on the number of unsecured souls in your possession.
- Level 2 - Reduced shield recharge window and recharge speed.
- Level 3 - Shield strength scales with spirit
- [4] Gnawing curse (Lowish cooldown, unit target): Curse an enemy with a swarm of biting rats. Moderate damage over time. Heavy initial move and roll slow that diminishes quickly over the duration. If a unit dies under the effect of gnawing curse, they release a swarm of targetable rat units which run towards nearby enemies and bite them damaging and slowing them. Can target non-heroes but spawns fewer rats.
Rat target priority: Nearest enemy you have recently damaged. > Nearest enemy who has damaged you. > Trooper pathing.
Spirit scaling affects rat damage and slow. Rats expire after a moderate duration.- Level 1 - Rats gain increased movespeed while chasing heroes.
- Level 2 - Rats gain a small portion of your maximum bullet and spirit shields.
- Level 3 - Units that die with a rat attacking them spawn an additional rat.
