I am a Paradox, Infernus, and Haze player. The last couple of updates have done some things that kind of changed how I think about charge abilities. At the start it just seemed like yea some abilities are meant to be charged, but now characters are getting charges added to skills at level 3 like Haze smoke bomb and Infernus flame dash. This also introduced I think the first time a character to have more than one charge ability.
First part of this thought is on the existing charge items Extra Charge and Rapid Recharge. So now you get these on Infernus but not for Catalyst but for flame dash. This leads me having 2 extra charges on Catalyst too, but not like I'm throwing Catalyst left and right. Would it be insane to make these item Imbued items? So they apply to just one ability. This could make balancing easier for these items specially if future heroes end up having more than one charge ability. I mean I've heard complaints about cooldowns and charge abilities maybe throw a small decrease like -3 spirit to the imbued ability for example. Not really needed but you see how having it imbue allowed for balancing options for extra charges.
That leads in the a second thought I had. When Paradox lost her charges on wall I had the thought you know it be nice to have charges on carbine. (At the time I assumed characters could only have one charge skill). I use to play Paradox with Echo Shard and while it was mostly for grenades I would use it sometimes for carbine. This gave me the realization that Echo Shard essentially just adds charges to a basic abilities. Why doesn't the item just imbue an ability with having charges. This again allows for better balancing of the item. Slight nerf to the item as it now imbues to one ability instead of being flexible, but also slight buff as you get back an active slot, but also I'd say a buff in the sense it just works. No weird moments where you throw a grenade reflex a wall before you hit shard and now you just doubled your wall instead of your grenade. Again also more balancing options like Bepop gets his bomb nerfed because of echo shard bombs so now all balancing is around that one build where if its echo shard imbued to bomb you could do stuff like make the time between charge use 1s for example making it hard to just instant cast 2 bombs on one target instead of nerfing bomb itself. These one trick pony items like Echo Shard are tricky to balance cuz it just does what it does, by making it imbue and add a charge you can then use mechanics around charge (recharge time, time between charges) to adjust it as well as maybe even say you get a charge but you lose some damage on that skill like -3 spirit like the example above. It just gives more options over all.
The real issue I see with making Echo Shard "Embue skill give skill 2 charges" is the obvious kind of thing discussed in the first part. Extra Charge and Rapid Recharge now apply to the skill imbued with Echo Shard. There would be heroes with more than one charge ability for example. This definitely buffs what echo shard could possible do for what like 10k souls in total you can have any skill have 4 charges. (I hear the people who say theirs too much cd reduction already). But if echo shard makes time of CD to gain a charge the same as the abilities and the time between charge use something maybe like 1s. Really more charges doesn't really have greatest impact, unless you spend a long time not using an ability to stash up charges.
