Hero Ability Concept: Flying Drone Viewport (RTS)

So basically this is an ability that changes how you control the hero and changes the viewport to be topdown to be like an RTS with WASD controls.

The hero would throw out a drone that always flys directly above the hero on the current layer.

While controlling the hero as the drone, the 'gun' changes and camera is locked.

When the drone fires, it highlights the hero and locks on with the hero as well, this does not cause the hero to move towards the target but to face them, unless stunned etc...

The drone can hold down the fire key to create an attack square capturing/targeting all those units in that square, which causes the hero to face the closest target.

When the drone alt-fires, the hero attacks the targets or whatever is infront of himself and moves towards the targetted postion and essentially performs an attack move at that location.

As the drone, the hero can also be controlled with WASD but the camera is locked to an angle - toggling out of the drone inorder to do specific micro movements.

I think when this hero activates drone mode it should allow him to scale walls to make the path finding way easier.

There was also an idea that the hero could alt-cast the drone ability to enable camera panning with the drone, which would move the drone away from the hero but fly back as soon as they let go of the ability key. It activates the cursor and edge panning would move the drone.


This idea is probably really dumb and doesn't work in Deadlock as many suggested...

Kinda like how this character, Goop, from Ben 10, works.

Except the drone is wayyy higher in altitude.

Goop the character is 'indestructible' so you have to kill the drone but I suppose for Deadlock, they could share HP and the Goop thing is incredibly tanky.

maybe its some kind of sentient ferrofluid and can also absorb bullets for some reason.
