Game Crashed, got a temp ban as a result...

I was mid match and my game crashed. An error popped up telling me to verify my game files, and so I did. Not the most ideal time to have to verify game files, but oh well. Only when I did verify the game, it was stuck at 0% and wouldn't move. I left it a little bit knowing that sometimes it takes some time to "warm up" before actually verifying.

After a couple of minutes, still nothing. So I restarted my computer in hopes it would fix it, after rebooting my PC the game wouldn't even load. It just added it to my download queue, but wouldn't actually download anything and kept saying "Verifying game files 0%". I left it again a few minutes, still nothing. And then decided, screw it I'll just re-install it. I have good internet, it shouldn't take long.

So I uninstalled the game, and then set it to download. Only it was still just sitting in my 'scheduled' queue, and whenever I tried to set it to download it would instantly bump back down to the scheduled queue. I decided to restart my PC again just in case, this time when my PC rebooted it began downloading. It was working thank god. The download quickly finished and I rejoined the match, I'd been missing quite awhile and fell quite far behind.

I didn't want to be a total waste of space for our team so I farmed where I could and helped hold the enemy team back where I could, by the end of the game (we lost) I was at on par with the rest of my team in terms of farm and even though I was missing for half the match - I was still fairly close to most of my other team mates in player damage. Basically, I didn't rejoin and just do nothing. I still tried.

The game ended, and now I have a 6hr temp ban. I know it's only 6 hours, but that means that I got temporarily banned for something completely out of my control. It was entirely the games fault, a bug or something or other caused me to crash and I am getting punished for it. And the fact that it's a 6hr temp ban leads me to believe that even though my going AFK was entirely out of my control, if I crash again like this in the future it will be an even longer temporary ban for something that is once again out of my control.

I understand the temporary ban is there to reduce the amount of people rage quitting and going AFK, but in situations like this it just isn't fair.

Same exact issue to me today, computer hardlocked, game wouldn't work, try to reinstall same issue with downloading. Got back into game and played it through after working through windows / steam issues and then a 6 hour ban.

Seemed like a windows crash to be fair, but a 6 hour ban after reinstalling and getting back into the game and playing it through sucks.

If there was a way to base it on how often you leave games etc that would be better. I never abandon games, and have had this crash issue twice in hundreds and hundreds of games.

I recall the OP responded to a post of mine from a while back with regard to disabling XMP having resolved this issue for them. Here's what I would recommend in no particular order to everyone else:

  • Set your computer BIOS/UEFI back to defaults according to your manufacturer's documentation and don't use any applications which apply an overclock from within the operating system.
  • Reduce the frequency of your RAM until it doesn't crash irrespective of XMP (or EXPO) being disabled.
  • Test your RAM with a bootable drive, not within Windows. https://www.memtest.org/
  • Consider replacing your RAM even if comprehensive testing succeeds.
  • Consider a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) if your hardware is within the return window of the vendor you purchased it from. Generally you can get a replacement this way.
  • It's worth checking the drive Deadlock and/or Steam is installed to for errors or corruption. chkdsk is a good place to start in Windows.

The behavior described seems to indicate a hardware issue cascading into software errors. It's not usual for file verification to make no progress or require a system restart to begin validating, and more so when reinstalling a game altogether (unless Steam is having a widespread outage preventing download).

If anyone has tried all of this to no success, it would be worth providing your system specifications to correlate the issue to a specific manufacturer or hardware that this consistently occurs on.

The download wouldn't happen until I switched steam to use Dallas over Chicago for download. It seems to just be a random issue with steam, everything else network wise was working properly on the PC. The crash/issue also is exceedingly rare for me (twice in around 500 games or so). It just is a bummer to be banned for hours for something that is out of my control for the most part and is something that is not the norm for my account (plus got back into that game, won it, and ended with a multi-kill streak).
