FPS drops when picking items in street brawl

Picking items in Street Brawl tanks my fps down from 60 fps to 5fps. It makes the game very difficult to play, as picking items takes twice as long with the menu being hard to navigate and the items taking longer to reveal. The game feels like it's on the verge of crashing every time. This wasn't happening until the Rem update, and now it happens every game. My framerate goes back to normal once the round starts, but this really sours the entire experience.

Happened to me sporadically the other day, I only temporarily fixed by alt tabbing/minimizing the game for a few seconds but it always came back every time a new round of buying started until the end of the game.
