An idea i have is for melee weapons to be customizable where each hero has 2-3 (?) different melee weapons with different properties. Main weapons such as Abram’s shotgun cannot be changed (?) but melee weapons can. I got this idea from Team Fortress 2 where each melee item has its own unique effects and I hope to see this in Deadlock.
With the example above, when you click on the melee weapon, it should show multiple melee options for Abrams.
Abrams will have something like a..
- Tome (Default melee):
Parry = A successful parry allows Abrams to reduce [%] spirit resistance of the affected target for [short duration]
- “#1 Detective” Coffee Mug: -> something Abrams might have since he looks sleep deprived and depressed lol
Parry = Successful parry allows for a ‘coffee stim’ where Abrams gains movement speed for [medium duration]
- Brass Knuckles or Spiked Leather Gloves: (this would make sense on Lash as well since he uses gloves)
Parry = Successful parry allows Abram’s to steal [small % of max hp] from enemy for a [short duration]
Other ideas:
+ There could also be mechanics like “failed/missed parry” which will apply a debuff on you but a successful parry buff is strong enough to make the weapon worth it, it is a high-risk high-reward weapon.
+ There could also be buffs that specifically buff certain hero abilities -> chain combos.
+ Some melee weapons are equipable on multiple heroes
Similarly for Yamato, you have her Katana as a default melee weapon and another one can be something like a traditional Japanese fan.
For characters like Haze you have the (sleeping) knives as default melee weapon, and for Pocket you have the frog suitcase as the default melee item, each with their own unique effects. I haven’t come up with more melee weapon ideas for these characters yet but you get the idea.
Of course, the melee damage of these weapons should be scaled appropriately to make sure it isn't too overpowered.
I understand that this has a few problems:
- “It adds another layer of complexity to the already complex gameplay of Deadlock” → True, but this can be experimented/added later on (years down the line) after the game officially launches, when people understand the game more.
- “It will add more emphasis on meleeing the opponent, which may take away from the ‘gun-play’ of Deadlock” → I don’t think it will take away from the gun-play at all since gun is still such a core gameplay mechanic in order to take objectives, secure souls from distance, kill from enemies distance etc… I think it will also allow for more melee + gun or melee + spirit hybrid builds
- “It takes a lot of effort, time and money to implement when this isn’t a MUST have thing in the game, since the game is completely ‘fine’ without it” → It is true that the game does not need this but I think this is such a FUN idea that would allow us as players to customize our characters even more and allows more choices/freedom for us.
- “This is cool, I wonder if this will work in my new gun build” (promotes more theory crafting) --> "wow that's sick, it works/compliments this build"
- “The enemy [hero] has this [melee weapon] in lane so i think i will be less/more aggressive towards them” (promotes new gameplay strategies)
- “This [melee weapon] looks sick on my [hero] and really matches their style” (promotes spending money/grinding for the item and increases customization for your hero)
This is just such a fun idea that i would love to see as a player in the game and this gives the player so much freedom and you don't see devs from other games do (this helps differentiate Deadlock even further to existing 3D mobas (like smite, predecessor) and other hero shooters (like marvel rivals, overwatch)).
