Sun Tzu shared a cheesy strat with the words "Throw your soldiers into positions whence there is no escape, and they will prefer death to flight." and the same can be used by the patrons to push in scary deals. The idea is that during a tremendous soul gap, the patrons will suggest the losing team to pick a powerful item with heavy downsides but at an affordable price. Ideally such items would have to be real sacrifices to each hero to have an artistic purpose, such as Cold Heart to Bebop or something, which would shut down Bebop's developing socialization. Perhaps it could be modeled similarly to Dota's jungle items: a choice between few items out of a larger pool that is different each match.
 
Its should just be items which you cannot sell with heavy penalties. Maybe add something like a discount for losing team to those items after certain minute.

Yes and yes. Maybe even made free if there is also a big difference in items slots to counter the snowballing further.

Now that I think of it, it would be fitting if cursed items impacted a few voicelines to show the impact to each character.
