Cannot upgrade ability with tab+<number> while dead

If you have an ability upgrade, during the game you can upgrade with alt+<number. However, if you're dead, doing this does nothing. Once you respawn it immediately works again.

Truth. I have the same. Most likely it's a feature or a workaround
