Bebop beam dealing damage from behind

Was playing as Drifter, teleported behind Bebop and I still took damage from his ult from behind. Not sure if this is intentional but it doesn't feel fair.

If you cast ult on Bebop on the ground you can see he actually has a hitbox around him too, not only the beam. It deals ~75% of the damage.

yeah its his aura of damage while in beam.
