On the last round, I (Geist) was able to take magic carpet even though all my slots were full. If i had to guess, i think it was something to do with taking fortitude as an extra item the previous pick. You can see this actually happened as on the game end screen, there are 12 items none of which are magic carpet, yet i still used it in the game.
