Summoning hero (candle based)

Intro:
So I'm a huge fan of summoning characters, games like Terraria, WoW, and even something like Trove. I think It's an underutilized archetype, and could fit well in this game if done right.

Making a summoner character that feels like you are in control is what I'm guessing is the hardest part about designing a hero like this, and I think It'd be the main reason that a character like this would not be made, also dealing with a bunch of minions from the opponents pov in a pvp setting also sounds like hell to balance and make fun for the opponent at the same time. Additionally this game has a lot of verticality which adds a whole new dimension of creating engaging minions for both the player and the opponent. Let's just act like all of those things are in check, what can we do with the setting of the game and what abilities could they have?

MOBA's are unique in that they already have minions, although they are inherently simple to not overwhelm/overcomplicate the gameplay loop, and in this crazy NYC, soul filled, bizarre, whatever you want to call it world, I think a good fit would be a candle based hero, seen as there are already candle minions and candle walker models (in development) and seen as there isn't already a hero with this theme. Although you'd have to make the minions distinct enough to not blend in too much with existing troopers

Ideas:
This section is meant to just give a load of examples of what could be done with a summoning hero in this game, I'm hoping the lack of detail in what I say will give you your own interpretation as to what it could become.

- Obviously there should be a minion summoning ability, the barebones of any summoning character, but it could be done in many ways, duplicating existing troopers, the classic summon 2-3 minions, maybe summon a minion wave via the lines just like normal troopers (this idea could be expanded to an ult or something that sends a boss type minion to a lane of your choosing)
- bats, robots, candles, creep, demons, and so on. All could work in this wonderful setting!
- boss minion is always fun, but these basic ideas should be expanded as stated above because they are really overused and is one of the main reasons this archetype is very stale most of the time.
- Maybe the character primary fire can sustain their minions?
- Wild idea but a character that is literally a ghost and can't be attacked by players and works in a spectator like state where they control minions in an almost RTS type fashion.
-RTS game inspiration, those games are all about controlling units!
-voice lines for the minions please please please.

There are so many ideas that i feel are undiscovered with this archetype and I hope people can add to ideas that could go in a character like this.

Thanks for reading :)

candle bat...... (i might sketch your ideas if they are good...)

That candle bat sketch is so cute... 🥺

I def feel like this game can incorporate a summoner hero effectively. I think the easiest way for the hero to direct its minions would be with an alt-fire or an alt-cast of the summon ability. I think a character whose ult summons one strong minion like Tibbers or Daisy from League would work better. It would be easier to implement and be easier for both teammates and opponents to play around. 6v6 team fights are already hectic enough. I think once you get multiple summons it gets complicated and limits control options. Flying only complicates this more. I think for multiple summons they'd need to be more similar to McGinnis turrets where they attack the closest target. Item considerations are important as well (I'm looking at you heroic aura). Lastly, a major issue with summoning a ton of minions is FPS.

From a visual standpoint, I really like the idea of spirits/ghosts. We already have Vindicta as a spirit returned to life why not more? Imagine directing your cute lil spirit ghosties 🥺

There are a lot of interactions to consider but I do think it can work well.

Yeah! this reply is very well thought out. Now I am also leaning far more towards the idea of 1 minion you have control over instead of multiple, It would probably be a far more approachable character that way too if you don't have to tackle like 2-4 minions at any given time, but would also allow a high (but not overwhelming) skill ceiling if the summon can be controlled precise enough. Maybe a character like ice climbers from melee would be a good source of inspiration.

I have also recently seen that Calico in neon prime used to have summons/troopers that she could summon on enemies where they then proceed to chase the nearest target, that idea likely ran into the same issues that you just described. Good reply thanks :)
