You just can't substitute, you seem to be put on the team, but can't control character. DC'ing and RC'ing seems to leave the team in 5v6. Not sure if its consistent, but I tried substituting twice and it had the same result.
The same problem is observed, if you press alt+tab during the game, an incomprehensible delay appears, but this delay is not related to the Internet connection.
