Stuck spectating after game started

Queued for a game then started spectating while I waited. Found a game before the spectating started but was then loaded into spectating rather than the game and couldn't leave spectating without receiving a penalty.

It was a game that had no existing spectators so it showed the 'loading spectator server' message before the 'Connecting to game server' message replaced it.

Had the exact same issue. I think it might have something to do with Nvidia overlay? When I press Alt+R I go back to my player view.

Solution for me was to press escape, press Alt+R, and then Alt-tab back in. Was super frustrating.

Turns out I did have a clip of it. Unfortunately its through steam so you can't see the alt tabbing shenanigans.
