I have self cast bound to right click, which is also zoom (by default). When I go to self cast, if I right click after queueing up the ability the zoom cancels the ability. This is especially egregious on Viscous as it does the alt-fire which is way slower than just zooming in.
Note that right clicking first can work, but again on Viscous in particular this locks you into his alt-fire which is slow.
