Parry not working at times if too close to the hit

At times I try to parry a heavy melee on reflex, but for whatever reason the parry VFX appears and a parry doesn't occur, while I get hit. I know I pressed F in time, since I see the VFX as the attack closes in, but doesn't actually work. This has been consistently annoying for me...
