I'm not sure if it's normal to patch games while they're running, but if it is then somethings going wrong with it or my computer can't handle it for some reason.

It'll start lagging and get progressively worse over a few seconds until it freezes. At that point I have to kill Steam from my system monitor because it isn't able to close the game itself. Thankfully I have time to pause the game and warn my team. Picture is what it looked like while it was freezing. It always freezes completely and softlocks steam when it tries to apply the update.

Ubuntu 24.10 with Nvidia 1070Ti, 16 gb memory and an Intel Xeon E2 (this CPU is old and too weak for the 1070)

If this is something to do with the steam settings please let me know.

You can edit the game settings from the library and stop updates from happening while you're in a game.

Yeah that sounds a lot like resource issues. My 2 cent diagnosis is the patch is eating up your RAM as it is applying, making your system have to start using swap space, and either you don't have enough and/or or your CPU isn't able to manage both running the game and juggling between RAM and swap

Thanks, I was looking at Deadlock specific settings, not Steam settings; have disabled downloads while in game. Maybe I should put in an old hdd for swap.

...Sometimes I go onto pcpartpicker and put together a new computer I won't be able to afford. 🫥
