I have always had a deep love of the Louisiana culture of Voodoo, and i think it would make for a great addition for a character, especially with the time period and lore. I picture the purple suit or robes, the big top hat, a snake around his neck and littered with charms hanging from a belt or neck.
For lore, here is what i got:
Jasper Boudreaux was born in Louisiana. Raised on stories of voodoo queens and whispered blessings, Jasper learned the ways of his Cajun ancestors. He wasn't just a shopkeeper, he was a Root Doctor, a healer who straddled the line between medicine and magic. But small-town Louisiana felt too small for Jasper's ambitions. He craved a bigger pond, a place where his talents could truly make a difference.
Then came the "Great Awakening," as folks back home called it. A veil lifted, revealing the spirit world in all its terrifying glory. Whispers became screams, benevolent spirits turned mischievous, and malevolent ones bolder. In Louisiana, it felt like a familiar tremor, but one that had shaken the very foundation of reality. Jasper knew this was his calling. He packed his bags, his most potent herbs, and a gator-skin hat (a symbol of his power back home), and headed north.
New York City, in the throes of the Depression and now a playground for the supernatural, was a perfect storm for Jasper. He set up shop in Harlem, a melting pot where superstition simmered alongside scientific curiosity. His storefront, "Jasper's Hoodoo Haven," became a stop for the bewildered and bedeviled. He sold dream catchers alongside aspirin, brewed potent teas to ward off evil spirits, and offered consultations that often felt like exorcisms disguised as therapy sessions.
Beneath the jovial exterior, Jasper nursed a secret. The Great Awakening had stirred something deep within him, a dormant power he didn't fully understand. Visions flickered in his dreams - a glowing fissure in the sky, whispers in a forgotten tongue. He felt a pull towards unraveling the mysteries of the Awakening, a task that might hold the key to restoring balance or even tipping the scales further. But for now, Jasper tended his shop, a beacon of hope in a city teetering on the edge of the supernatural.
As for abilities, here are some of my ideas.
Spiced Brew: Samedi takes a sip from his bottle, giving him a random buff. Alternatively The bottle charges based on spirit damage dealt, then heals based on charge.
Ancestor Séance: A Spirit appears to either side of Samedi, infusing your attacks to deal full spirit damage.
Zombie Dust: Samedi blows dust in a cone in front of him, enemies are slowed, and weapon damage is reduced. Alternatively the enemies are feared away from Samedi.
Snake Bite: The snake around Samedis neck lashes out at a target, dealing damage and poisoning them for a duration.
Loa Bargain: Samedi loses a percentage of his health, gaining bonus weapon/Spirit damage and Lifesteal for the duration.
Spirit Walk: Samedi gains move speed and can walk through walls for a duration. Alternatively he gains evasion as he is between worlds.
Gator Bait: Samedi steps onto a crocodile, gaining move speed and beginning a charge. Upon hitting an enemy, the gator lashes out, stunning the target and dealing damage.
Spirit Sight: Samedi becomes possessed, stunning himself while revealing the map for a duration. Nearby enemies are feared.
Voodoo Mark: At close range, Samedi plants a voodoo doll, and damage dealt to the doll is transferred to the target.
