Issues alt-tabbing while fullscreen mode on a lower resolution than my monitor

I'm using bootcamp on a 4k iMac monitor. The game is a bit cpu intensive for my system so I need to run it on a lower resolution in exclusive fullscreen. The issue is, whenever I alt tab the system has to change my resolution back and forth (which shouldn't be too much of a problem), but when I get back into the game all of the menus (shop, main menu, pause menu - anywhere with a cursor) is aligned to the larger resolution and the menus become unusable - as things like exit and resume, or even just the shop items are impossible to click on.

(this happens reliably - every time I alt-tab while using exclusive fullscreen on a lower than native resolution)
