Mordecai Blackwood — Vampire and Engineer
For most New Yorkers, the world is chaos, but for Mordecai Blackwood, he's just an imperfect machine that needs to be calibrated with steel and magic. An outstanding mind of his generation, he created mechanisms that questioned the laws of nature: clocks that steal moments of life, and bridges spanning the abyss.
However, the Ancient vampires saw in his "black machines" not progress, but a threat to their eternal peace. They were afraid that the engineer's ambitions would turn the top predators into mere gears of his grandiose plans.
In order to stop the master forever, the elders committed a demonstratively cruel act: they cut off his right arm and cast a Crystal Catalyst spell on his body. Now Mordecai cannot eat — any drop of blood that enters his body instantly reacts with black magic and turns into "bloody ice". These diamond-sharp red crystals clog his veins, causing unbearable pain with every movement.
But Mordecai did not accept the fate of the cripple. He turned his suffering into an engineering advantage.
