Having 1 unsecured soul can result in it never becoming secured

I was playing a match earlier, and I noticed I had 1 unsecured soul that never became secured, even after minutes of waiting. Once I picked up someone else's unsecured souls, they became secured as usual, but I noticed that the number was now even instead of odd.

It's not particularly useful, but you can see that I have 1 unsecured soul in this image.
