Game lockup when using lower resolutions with "nearest" scaling on linux nvidia

So if I use this command in desktop:

nvidia-settings -a CurrentMetaMode="DP-4: 1920x1080_144 {ViewPortIn=960x540, ViewPortOut=1920x1080+0+0, ResamplingMethod=Nearest}"

it seems like if I do that first and open the game on first boot, and never tab out, it works, but if I change focus from the game at any point it will lockup and not respond with a solid 1 frame per 10 seconds and difficulty tabbing out to get back to steam to close the game again. Then the same thing will happen if I try aghain unless I remove "nearest", which defaults to bilinear scaling.
That's fine but nearest scaling looks a lot cleaner than bilinear and since the in game render scale also uses bilinear, it would be nice if there was a custom way to set nearest without it bugging out.
Using ubuntu linux with latest 570 nvidia drivers, proton - GE 15 with vulkan mode set, reflex enabled, and engine sleep 1.
