It seems that damage amp behaves inconsistently depending on the skill in question, creating very weird or at least unexpected interactions with items like Mystic/Improved Burst. In some cases, they indeed amplify the original damage, while in others they are treated as bonus damage. I've seen multiple threads reporting bugs for specific skills, so it seemed this is a general consistency problem that might need to be tracked in a dedicated thread.
Description:
Some items explicitly state they deal bonus damage, like Quicksilver Reload, so you could argue that it would be expected that it is a separate instance of damage.
However, there are skills whose descriptions mention they increase the damage the player deals, but only some of them actually increase it, while others just deal a separate instance.
Example 1: Mo & Krill Scorn
- Description: Adds a debuff to enemies that lets Mo & Krill deal +15% Damage to them.
- Behavior: Indeed amplifies all Mo & Krill's damage against the target by increasing the original damage instances.
Example 2: Lady Geist Malice:
- Description: Each stack slows the victim and increases the damage they take from you.
- Behavior: It is dealt as a separate instance of damage, just like bonus damage from Quicksilver Reload.
Example 3: Infernus Catalyst
- Description: Spew napalm that slows enemy movement and amplifies the damage Infernus does to them.
- Behavior: Uses different wording ("amplifies" instead of "increases"), but still uses a separate damage instance like Malice.
Expected behavior:
Skills that are described as giving increased damage should increase the original instance of damage, instead of applying additional instances of damage - the latter should only happen when "bonus" damage is stated.
Actual behavior:
It seems that every skill and item that gives damage amplification actually does a separate instance of damage instead, except the skills that get damage amp as a part of an upgrade, which is only Spectral Wall & Scorn. Depending on how this is coded, it is possible it is what's affecting the inconsistency in behavior.
Possible fix 1:
Reword the inconsistent descriptions to state they give bonus damage instead of increased damage (or use other terms entirely if those two don't seem clear enough).
Possible fix 2:
Update the skills to reflect their description and increase the original damage instances.
Notes:
Malice mentions "increased damage" while Catalyst mentions "damage amplification", even though they behave the same - using one term across all skills and items might help as the number of skills and items grows.
