Bad lag spikes disconnect me from the game and tank my internet

This is something that has happened to me in tf2 and then dota 2 many times. I don't know why it happens and I don't know why it stopped happening.

In Deadlock it had never happened but after the 4 hero update it's been happening. Basically while I play a game my internet tanks and stops working, though sometimes it's just really bad lag spikes. You'll think I'm mental and that it's something that has to be on my end but it has happened to me with wholly different computers and internet providers with the ONLY constant being that I was playing online Valve games at the moment it happens.

The same thing happens to me (AZ) and a friend (GA). I haven't ruled out that our ISP's are to blame though.
